History
Origins
foonas was originally conceived by NAiL in 2006 using the Open Embedded project as a base to build a new NAS platform. In early 2007 timtim also started working on a separate embedded Linux distribution for Buffalo Linkstations (a complete open source replacement for the original Openlink firmware) also using a fork of Open Embedded.
Once it became clear that their goals were the same both projects were merged. The operating system, various software packages and platform support from NAiLs work were kept and the Linkstation platform support from timtim and the beginnings of the web interface and supporting software were merged. Currently the operating system is referred to as foonas and the presentation layer (web interface) as Openlink.
Recent Landmarks
- September 2009 - foonas.org joins NAS-Central
- January 2009 - Tim gets openemebdded git access!
- January 2008 - Foonas-em was released, the first stable OS release from foonas.org
- December 2007 - The foonas-iscsi project was announced.
- November 2007 - The entire foonas.org portal was moved to OSUOSL.
- October 2007 - foonas-em was suddenly born out of foonas.
