chb (5Oct2008):

I think there are quite a few people who've a reasonable amount of tech savvy that are interested in a project just like this.

I'd like to expand the list of boards under consideration to include MSI's MS-9818 and MS-9832, as well as Intel's new powerhouse, the DG45FC. Note as well that Chenbrow's own product manual on the NAS case they manufacture has pictures of the Albatron Mini-ITX KI690-AM2, which has four on-board SATA II connectors.

Also, I'm wondering why FreeNAS is not considered as a possible OS. NASLite-2 from Server Elements might also be evaluated.

Mindbender 10:47, 10 October 2008 (UTC): i am as well interested in the foobox project. i think about buying everything as soon as a affordable atom based board is available. The main reason why FreeNAS is no option is because there is no support for the non-x86 embedded NAS devices in the FreeBSD kernel...and FreeNAS is available for x86 only as far as i know. thats exactly why the foonas distro (which is compiled with openembedded) emerged as far as i know.

Thanks, we will look at these boards. The spec needs revising as it was assembled some time ago - I'm happy to revisit it in the very near future. The dual core atoms are now available! FreeNAS looks great however it is BSD based - we are all about Linux NAS. Looked at NASLite-2 very quickly and it looks like a commercial product and has a license which makes it incompatible for our usage. We are open to other suggestions though!
